Dr. Robert Bartel visited Camp ASCCA on Wednesday to give a few of our summer staff members physicals. While he was here, I got the chance to meet him and talk for a few minutes. Bartel has been the Camp Doctor for around 30 years and remembers jogging the paths here at Camp ASCCA.
Bartel has many great reasons why he decided to be the doctor here at Camp ASCCA and why he still is. Some of his motivations include his daughter who has Cerebral Palsy and a previous patient of his, Hoyt Webb. Webb was involved in Camp ASCCA since its planning stage and remained a huge supporter and volunteer throughout his life. Dr. Bartel’s main motivation for becoming the Camp Doctor was “because it was the right thing to do.”
Usually, Dr. Bartel practices medicine at Lake Martin Family Medicine, but he also has a private practice as well. To learn more about all the services Bartel provides for Camp ASCCA, please read this previous blog from our site.
I asked Dr. Bartel what he thought was the greatest part about Camp ASCCA. He told me that the best thing about Camp ASCCA is the service provided for people who may have never had the opportunity to zip line, waterslides, or go to a summer camp before. These activities at Camp ASCCA give campers self esteem and experiences they will never forget.
