New Face, Familiar Place

For 10 years, Owen Thome has been coming to ASCCA through the Camp Seale Harris camps we host every summer. Similar to the way ASCCA camps are set up, Camp Seale Harris have week long sessions, including a Family Weekend. These weeks are jam packed with fun and designed for children and teens with diabetes. During this year’s sessions, Owen worked as a Camp Counselor. But this time, he stayed behind to be a part of our Adventure Program Staff for his first official ASCCA summer!

During their camp sessions, the Camp Seale Harris staff and ASCCA Program Staff work so closely and so well together, it’s almost like having extended family come visit for a few weeks! This has allowed for more friendships to form and a better appreciation for the integral parts we all play. Owen’s developed his own relationships over the years that have allowed for a smooth Camp Seale Harris to ASCCA transition.

Owen was interested in being a part of the ASCCA family after hearing so many stories over the years, about how fun and rewarding it is to work here. We can’t argue with that! Taking his campers to our different activities during Camp Seale Harris weeks has also helped him get an idea of what things would be like on the other side. He worked at a rock climbing gym two years prior, so Adventure Staff seemed like it’d be the perfect fit!

This week he’s getting the chance to work with the rest of the Adventure Staff for the first time. So far, he’s assisted with the set up and take down for our Zip Line activity. He even got the experience of pulling a camper onto the platform and actually sending them down the zip line. Owen is really pumped about his first ASCCA summer and looks forward to helping campers conquer their fears!

Keep up with Owen and the rest of Adventure Staff on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and right here on our website!
