Our schedules for this week said “It’s a Mystery” for Wednesday’s night activity. No one knew what was going to happen when dinner was over, but Camp Director Matt Rickman told us all to head to The OutPost. We ended up having a concert by local band Route 66!
Our Director of Health Services Abbey Love Murray’s husband Quillie is a member of the band, and they rocked the stage and had our campers and staff jamming all night. They started with some country jams to get everyone dancing and singing. Am I the Only One by Dierks Bentley and Chicken Fried by the Zac Brown Band kept everyone out of their seats dancing.
We put chairs out at the beginning but many of us ended up not needing them. Hammocks were set up outside The OutPost as always for any campers who don’t want to be around loud music or large crowds.
They kept up the energy with classics like Drift Away, Play that Funky Music, and Bad Moon Rising. Once they played Shout, everyone did just that. They threw their hands up and shouted. Some newer songs were also thrown in the mix. Ride Wit Me by Nelly had everyone yelling along with the lyrics, and everyone found a dance partner for Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud.
We had some nachos about half way through the concert to refuel everyone after dancing away all their energy. After everyone was reenergized, they jammed to even more songs until Route 66 called the last song. Superstitious by Stevie Wonder was supposed to end the concert, but everyone yelled for more. They went on to play Sweet Home Alabama, and everyone tried to outdo each other by shouting Roll Tide Roll and War Eagle.
Quillie called Matt Rickman up to the stage to start the camp goodnight song, but we weren’t having that. Everyone chanted his name until he sang Word Up for us!
After that everyone held hands for the goodnight song and end of our wonderful Wednesday. This was a great surprise for our campers and staff, and we hope Route 66 comes back again to play for us.
Keep up with our Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates on the rest of this week’s mysteries and all of our summer activities!
