Members of the Alex City Rotary Club took the tee boxes and greens yesterday afternoon at Willow Point Country Club for their 18th annual Best-Ball tournament.

Funds for the tournament, which has raised close to two million dollars over the past 18 years, go to help support both Camp ASCCA and Children’s Harbor.

“This tournament is something that we have been doing for quite a while now,” tournament chairman David Sturdivant said.
“It’s a great way for local and even out-of-state businesses to come together and have fun for a great cause.”

The tournament was played in the popular Best-Ball format, as scores were tallied by both net scoring and gross scoring.

Russell Medical Center took the first place crown with the top gross score, while BB&T finished in second place.

In the net score division, Children’s Harbor took the top spot, as Harmon Dennis Bradshaw Inc. took the second place finish.

Over 76 golfers competed in the event, compiling 19 four-some groups, as numerous businesses and companies from across the state of Alabama and the country were represented.

“It was great to see sponsors within our local community,” Sturdivant said.
“It also goes to show the reputation and respect that this tournament has built with teams coming from throughout the state, as well as Cleveland, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana.”

This year’s financial goal was $45,000 from sponsors, something that Sturdivant feels confident was reached.

“The entire focus is to make sure we do as much as we can to help out Camp ASCAA and Children’s Harbor in any way possible,” Sturdivant said.
“There are constantly things that change, especially in today’s economy. But, it shows the dedication of all of the tournament participants to still meet our goal.”

Sturdivant went on to say that the tournament is something that is expected to continue for many years to come, as any local and statewide businesses are more than welcome to get involved.

“We’re always looking to expand the tournament,” Sturdivant said.
“It’s a great way to raise money for a great cause.”
