Campers had the time of their lives tonight as they learned a synchronized swimming routine from Program Staff members Gwin Walker and Victoria Dean. According to Gwin and Victoria, Free Choice at the pool during Mobile Rotary Week always turns in to synchronized swimming of some sort. Last week, they were playing around and making up moves to “Under the Sea” from Disney’s The Litte Mermaid , and thought it’d be cool to add it to this week’s schedule.
After dinner, Victoria and Gwin anxiously waited for campers to arrive for the very first synchronized swimming class! Before the teaching began, they showed everyone the routine so they could get an idea of what they’ll be learning. All the campers cheered and said how excited they were to start learning the routine!
As Gwin and Victoria demonstrated the different moves, campers gave their best effort as they followed along. These two young ladies were th best cheerleaders for campers, encouraging them to do moves they weren’t exactly certain they could do. However, whether the move was executed exactly how it was taught wasn’t the main goal. Our main concern was that campers were having fun and they were! Several of them told Gwin and Victoria how much they were enjoying themselves.
Once they were ready to perform the routine for everyone, an audience of campers and counselors gathered poolside to watch! Camp Director Matt Rickman and his wife Dana even stopped by to cheer everyone on. The synchronzied swimming participants had so much fun performing in front of their friends as they clapped and celebrated how well they had done.
Our first synchronized swimming class was a success and we hope to have more in the future. Thanks to Gwin and Victoria for coming up with the idea and helping campers have the time of their lives this week.
