Camp ASCCA isn’t just a place; it’s the people who make it feel like home. In this series, we’re shining a spotlight on the staff, past and present, who dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to creating unforgettable experiences for our campers. From heartfelt stories to behind-the-scenes moments, get to know the faces, positions, and journeys that make ASCCA truly special.
Some of the most important work at Camp ASCCA happens behind the scenes. Since January 3, 2012, Karen Cheatham has been quietly helping keep Camp running smoothly. From managing finances to handling HR and payroll, her work supports every camper, staff member, and program that takes place here.
“The reason I continue to stay on board with Camp ASCCA is because of the people and the mission of Camp,” she shares. “Witnessing people transform as they gain skills and belief in themselves is incredibly rewarding.”
Working at Camp ASCCA has given her a unique perspective on the impact of the camp experience. While many people think about the activities and programs campers participate in, Karen has had the opportunity to see how empowerment and encouragement can truly change lives.
“For individuals with disabilities, the benefits of empowerment through support are life-changing,” Karen says.
One memory from her very first summer at camp still stands out years later. It was the moment she realized just how deeply Camp ASCCA affects everyone who walks through its gates.
“My first summer at Camp, I remember watching out the window during Session 1 checkout,” she says. “I saw campers in the parking lot hugging their counselors goodbye and crying. When they broke the hug, and the counselors walked away, I noticed that they were crying too. I learned then that it’s not only the campers’ lives that are affected. The staffs’ lives are changed, too.”
For Karen, Camp ASCCA offers something that many workplaces cannot. It provides a sense of purpose. Being part of a place where growth, independence, and confidence are celebrated daily makes the work deeply meaningful.
“It offers me great personal fulfillment by witnessing, supporting, and celebrating the achievements and independence of others gained here at Camp,” she says.
Karen believes one of the most powerful ways Camp ASCCA makes a difference is by helping people shift their perspective.
“A major difference is a shift in perspective toward focusing on abilities rather than limitations.”
Over the years, Camp ASCCA has shaped her life just as much as it has impacted campers and staff.
“Camp has taught me humility, patience, and compassion,” she says. “It has helped me appreciate the life that each person has been given.”
The community at Camp ASCCA has also influenced how she views relationships. The bonds formed here are built on love, respect, and a shared commitment to lifting one another up.
“Despite challenges, everyone has unique strengths and personalities to contribute,” she says.
When asked to describe Camp ASCCA in one word, her answer came quickly.
“Pride. It gives me a great sense of pride watching campers and staff thrive, overcome obstacles, and gain confidence through Camp,” she says.
One of her proudest moments at Camp ASCCA came during a difficult time. Last summer, a fire damaged the dining hall. While the moment itself was challenging, the response from the community revealed just how much Camp ASCCA means to so many people.
The laundry room was damaged as well, and staff had to take loads of laundry into Dadeville to use the laundromat. When people saw the Camp ASCCA van parked outside, they would stop to offer spare change to help cover the cost.
Supporters called daily asking how they could help. The Alabama Disaster Relief mass feeding unit even stepped in and volunteered for the remainder of the summer sessions by operating an outdoor kitchen.
“They helped save our summer,” she says. “Seeing that kind of love and support is so amazing.”
For campers, staff, and families, her advice is simple.
“We are all unique and have our own strengths and limitations. Every person’s path is different,” she says. “Camp ASCCA is a place where we can overcome barriers that affect daily life and celebrate each other’s strengths together.”
At Camp ASCCA, the people who make camp possible are just as important as the experiences campers take home. Thanks to the dedication of staff members like her, the mission of Camp ASCCA continues to thrive every single day.
