This summer, I have had the honor of representing Camp ASCCA as a public relations intern. From Session 1 to Session 7, the blessing that ASCCA has been on my life was truly evident. It helped prepare me for post-graduation from Auburn University in this field, but it gave me more than that. It gave me a new perspective on life that I will carry with me forever.
My mom passed away in the early months of summer, making it really hard to find the beauty in all of God’s creation. I came to Camp feeling broken, but this place helped me see the world in a new light. It showed me that your abilities do not define you. They do not define what you can do, and they definitely don’t define who you can become. Despite life’s circumstances, there will always be wonder in the Lord’s creation, his people.
I have met some of the most amazing ones in my time here, both campers and staff. It’s funny how you can be struggling so and find people who are exactly what you need in that moment. During Session 1, it was Miss Michelle’s gentle hugs and Alphonso’s rendition of “My Girl.” In Session 6, it was Jozef’s infectious smile and laughter. Throughout it all, my cabinmates, Gwen, Avery, Madi, Lena, Abby, Ferrera, Natalie, and Caroline, made me feel loved and appreciated. I don’t think my summer would have been as impactful without my Cheaha girls. The biggest shoutout of all goes to my office sisters, Brantly and Elise. Their kind hearts and joyful spirits instantly felt like a blessing. They made every workday feel like we weren’t working at all, just friends hanging out.
Camp ASCCA may have needed me for this position, but I needed it more. Each session’s slideshow ends with “The Banjo Song” by Mumford & Sons. There is a line from the song that goes like this: Well, hey, did you call? Did you fall? Do you need someone? Turns out I needed more than a single someone. Every camper, every staff member, they each played an integral part in making this the best summer of my life, and I will be eternally grateful. Thank you, Camp ASCCA, for giving me lifelong friends and showing me the genuine meaning of unconditional love! This isn’t goodbye, just a sweet see you later!
