UNA Students Visit Camp ASCCA

For the past 15 years Dr. Mike Hall of the University of North Alabama has introduced his Recreation for Special Populations class to the magic which is Camp ASCCA. Students get hands-on experience assisting campers with activities from zip lining and tubing to arts and crafts, water sliding and so much more. Students also transform as they learn the importance of creating a bond with the campers that make Camp ASCCA unforgettable!

During this week, aptly titled Camp Rocks!, eight such UNA students volunteered as counselors for campers from Malone High School (joining us all the way from Florida!), the Therapeutic Recreation Center from Montgomery, and an alumni group from the Dothan area. A talent show, game night, and dance were among the many highlights of this week.

As a member of the UNA group, I wish to quickly convey the beauty of the relationships that grow at Camp ASCCA. During our short time at camp, I witnessed an evolution in my peers — a boundless energy to see smiles on the faces of these campers. Special bonds between camper and counselor grew with such ease that an onlooker would swear the groups had known one another for years! Words are not adequate to describe the feeling you get to just be a part of the camper’s lives for even a few days. I feel so privileged to have observed sweet new friendships that make the experience both singular and unforgettable. Check out more pictures from the week on the Flickr album.
