Day one has come to an end, and with only a week left until Camp ASCCA starts, this summer’s staff is ready to work. Today, everyone arrived at Camp, including counselors, nurses, SCITs, and unit leaders. All of them arrived ready to go through the week-long training session that all Camp ASCCA summer staff goes through to prepare for Camp. With some familiar faces arriving along with some new ones, I believe this summer’s Camp ASCCA staff is going to be outstanding.
Earlier yesterday, after everyone arrived, we met as a team to discuss some Camp rules and policies that was led by Program Director Amber Cotney. Along with Amber’s introduction to Camp, everyone had the chance to introduce themselves to the group. After the introductions, we had a guest speaker in attendance to discuss some important matters about some common disabilities we see here at Camp. We all had the privilege to listen to Dr. Law and his knowledge on cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy, which is commonly known as MD.
Dr. Law informed us on all the different types of cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy and how to properly care for the individuals with these disabilities. I personally think that the most important part of Dr. Law’s speech yesterday was defining each disability and telling us what to look for when it comes to the impact it has on an individual. He wanted us to learn that there are very different qualities of each disability and that it can be different for every person. We want to thank Dr. Law for informing us on such important knowledge. It is important to us here at Camp ASCCA that we bring in professionals to discuss important situations that we might experience this summer at Camp.
After a long day, we all gathered at the OutPost for dinner and some music. Matt Mayes and John Meyer of Jupiter Coyote were the musical guests, and it was nice and relaxing to listen to them as we enjoyed our barbecue sandwiches. It was a great ending to a great day, and we cannot wait to see what the second day of orientation brings us.
