Everyday, after rest period and snack time, campers have what we call Free Choice Activities. These are a select few of activities that may not normally be a part of the regular activity rotations, from which campers get to choose which ones they want to go to. Some of the more popular ones require sign-ups, which counselors do during lunch time. Those are usually activities like Demo Farm, Boatrides, Zip Tower and more. Tonight’s sign-up activities included Horseback Riding, Nature Project and Cooking Class!
During tonight’s cooking class, campers decorated their own cupcakes and then helped some members of the Program Staff prepare the batter for more to be served after dinner. They got to choose between yellow and chocolate cupcakes, and vanilla and chocolate icing.
For extra safety precautions, and in an effort to keep all cupcakes intact, plastic spoons were used to spread the icing on cupcakes. Counselors jumped in to help campers when needed! For the most part though, all decorations were done by the campers.
Other decorations and toppings included sprinkles of various colors and shapes. There was even the option of crumbled oreos to add more flavor and flare! It was really cool to see the campers express their creativity with an activity like this.
After they enjoyed their decorative and delicious treats, Program Staff members went around to different campers at the table, giving them the opportunity to help make cupcake batter. The eggs for the batter were already cracked, but some campers helped pour the dry ingredients into the bowl. Some helped mix all the ingredients together and others helped placed the cupcake liners in baking sheets!
We enjoy doing activities that allow the campers to be hands-on as much as possible, and we’re certain they enjoy it too! Be sure to check out for more cooking class fun on Flickr and stay tuned for more Session 2 action on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and right here on our website!
