Camp ASCCA has positively impacted individuals with disabilities, their families, and dedicated staff for almost 50 years. At ASCCA, people are valued and celebrated for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities — a truly unique space where campers can embrace their individuality and independence in a supportive, supervised environment.
For years, our staff members have returned summer after summer, and we’re excited to share their stories! Through ‘Why ASCCA,’ we explore the big question—why?
Abby’s journey with Camp ASCCA began in 2011, sparking a lifelong bond and a deep passion for serving individuals with disabilities. Through every moment, she grew in love and care for the people around her. Today, she proudly shares her ‘Why ASCCA’ story.

“I first learned about Camp ASCCA during my sophomore year of high school when Allison Weatherbee visited as a guest speaker. At the time, I was a student aide in a multi-needs classroom and had a strong interest in pursuing a career in special education.
When the summer after my freshman year of college arrived, I was searching for a meaningful summer job. I recalled Allison’s presentation and the incredible opportunities Camp ASCCA offered. It seemed like the perfect fit—and it was.

The summer of 2011 marked the beginning of a lifelong connection to a place that quickly became a second home. What started as a summer job grew into a deep and lasting passion, bringing me back year after year. Over time, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in various roles at Camp ASCCA, including public relations staff, lifeguard, arts and crafts instructor, and counselor. Each of these roles taught me valuable lessons that I now apply in my classroom as a special education teacher.
Currently, I am in my 11th year of teaching, and the skills I developed at camp continue to shape my approach to education and student engagement.
Camp ASCCA not only allowed me to serve in diverse roles but also introduced me to two of my lifelong best friends, Callie and Cotney. Over the years, we’ve reunited at camp for special weekends and shared many adventures together. The friendships and experiences I’ve gained through Camp ASCCA are truly priceless, and I will forever cherish the lasting impact it has had on my life.

Being part of Camp ASCCA and witnessing the magic it brings to so many lives is something I wish everyone could experience. Watching campers conquer their fears and participate in activities they once thought were impossible is truly inspiring. These moments are among the most rewarding I have ever experienced.
I am incredibly grateful for the memories made during summers and weekends at ASCCA—memories that continue to impact my life in the most meaningful ways.”
