Why ASCCA: Brandon’s Journey of Love and Inclusion

Camp ASCCA has positively impacted individuals with disabilities, their families, and dedicated staff for almost 50 years. At ASCCA, people are valued and celebrated for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities — a truly unique space where campers can embrace their individuality and independence in a supportive, supervised environment.

For years, our staff members have returned summer after summer, and we’re excited to share their stories! Through ‘Why ASCCA,’ we explore the big question–why?

Brandon’s journey with Camp ASCCA began over a decade ago, yet he continues to return, drawn by the meaningful relationships he’s built with so many of our beloved campers. Now, he shares his ‘Why ASCCA’ story.

Brandon Kelly & Matthew Davis. Forever friends.

“I love trying new things and having new experiences because they allow you to grow in so many ways by branching out. I first heard about Camp ASCCA through my best friends and decided to check it out for myself in 2013–2014.

My older sister was involved in programs in high school and would tell my younger brother and me stories about the amazing people she met through PALS (Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies). So, I figured—why not give it a shot?

My first year at ASCCA was brief. However, after just one day as a counselor-in-training (CIT), I knew I had found heaven on earth. The following year, I returned as a counselor and spent several years immersed in the camp’s vibrant community, eventually taking on a role as a program staff member.

During my first year, I met a guy my age, Matthew Davis. He, along with everyone else I encountered, changed my life forever. In a world where judgment is often the norm—where people are scrutinized for their appearance, speech, clothing, and interests—Camp ASCCA stands apart. It’s a sanctuary filled with differences, yet it radiates an unparalleled love for everyone involved.

Over the past decade of working at ASCCA, I’ve learned invaluable lessons that I still carry with me today. I was fortunate enough to adjust my work schedule to seven days on and seven days off, allowing me to return for a few weeks each summer.

Camp ASCCA is a place where I reconnect with some of the most incredible individuals I’ve ever met. The pull to return is like an addiction—there’s truly no place like home.

The question was ‘Why ASCCA?’ but for me, it was more like ‘Why not ASCCA?’”
