Why ASCCA: Caroline’s Greatest YES

For nearly 50 years, Camp ASCCA has made a meaningful impact on individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are recognized for who they are—not defined by their disabilities. We offer year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities. It’s a unique place where campers can express their individuality and independence in a supportive and supervised environment.

For years, our staff members have returned summer after summer, and we’re excited to share their stories! Through ‘Why ASCCA,’ we explore the big question—why?

Caroline, a dedicated staff member since 2021, has spent countless hours at Camp ASCCA. Over the years, she has grown, learned, and discovered a family beyond her own. Now, she shares her personal “Why ASCCA” story.

“I have been surrounded by the disability community essentially my entire life — I have always been drawn to people. I spent my high school years being as involved as possible. I never doubted that my calling in life was to work with people with disabilities in some aspect.

My ‘Why ASCCA’ story began about five or six years ago. I can’t recall how I got involved with Camp ASCCA whether it was through social media or a family I babysat for, I didn’t know anyone who worked there. In the Summer of 2021, I signed up to work as a CIT for a week and stayed an additional week.

I remember feeling incredibly welcomed by everyone on staff despite being the youngest one there. Since then, I have worked every summer as a counselor, and this year I will return as a unit leader.

I have yet to find a place that has the same kind of joy that ASCCA holds. It’s often said that it’s a piece of heaven on earth, and I fully believe it! ASCCA holds many memories, but one of my favorites happened this past summer. One of my campers whom I’ve cared for a few years in a row was able to attend the duration of the weekly concert and have a blast! We typically spent concerts in the sensory room, so it was amazing to see the excitement and experience a first!

Finding Camp ASCCA is one of the biggest blessings of my life. After countless summers and weekend camps, I can confidently say ASCCA is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!”
