For nearly five decades, Camp ASCCA has enriched the lives of individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are valued for who they are — not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities, offering a unique environment where campers can embrace their individuality and independence with the support and supervision they need.
Many of our staff members return summer after summer, and we’re excited to highlight their stories! Why ASCCA delves into the heart of the question — why?
Grayson, a committed staff member since 2022, has dedicated much of his time to Camp ASCCA. He’s experienced unforgettable highs and the profound joy that comes with life-changing moments. Now, Grayson shares his “Why ASCCA.“

“When I was younger, I attended Camp Seale Harris, a summer camp for diabetics across the southeastern United States, primarily in Alabama. CSH held its largest sessions at Camp ASCCA.
During my first summer, I was instantly curious about what Camp ASCCA truly was. As I got older and spoke with the program staff, I learned what ASCCA was all about. I had always heard stories from other people’s perspectives, but I knew I wanted to experience the magical moments at ASCCA for myself. When the time was right, I signed up to be part of the program staff in 2022.
From that moment on, I’ve had experiences at camp like no other. I’ve seen campers show so much love, excitement, and joy throughout their week. As part of the adventure staff, I got to see campers conquer the zipline for the first time or ride it for the “millionth” time. Seeing their smiles and genuine excitement about the activities truly showed me why Camp ASCCA is so special.

Since that first summer, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to be a counselor. Each week, I’ve had awesome campers, learned their stories about why they keep coming to camp, and created new memories with them. It’s truly magical and inspiring for anyone new to ASCCA.
These moments make me think back to my time before ASCCA — how a younger version of me yearned for my own stories to tell about such an amazing place and life-changing experience. If you’re looking for something similar — a way to build lifelong memories, spend time with the best campers and staff in the world — ASCCA is your new home, ready to welcome you with open arms.”
