For nearly 50 years, Camp ASCCA has positively impacted individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are valued for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and accessible camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities, creating a unique environment where campers can embrace their individuality and independence with support and supervision.
Many of our staff return year after year, captivated by the meaningful connections they’ve made. Through Why ASCCA, we dive into the heart of the question — why?
Leah, a seasoned staff member, first began her journey in 2016 and has returned year after year. Nearly a decade later, she still can’t get enough of ASCCA! Now, Leah shares her “Why ASCCA” story.

“I first heard about Camp ASCCA when my best friend started working there. In college, when I needed an internship for my major, ASCCA seemed like the perfect place! I thought I’d work one summer and that would be it — but nine years later, I still can’t get enough!
Over the years, I’ve held nearly every position. I’ve been a counselor, program staff, unit leader, and nurse. In fact, my experience at Camp ASCCA inspired me to return to nursing school a few years after graduating. Now, I work in the PICU at Children’s of Alabama!
Camp ASCCA is a special place, filled with the most extraordinary people. I’ve made lifelong friends with campers, their families, and the staff. Watching campers accomplish things the world tells them they “can’t do” has completely changed my outlook on life. The memories and experiences I’ve had at ASCCA are irreplaceable. I’m so thankful for Camp and all the joy and laughter it has brought me over the years!”
