Why ASCCA: Michael Kelly’s Path of Dedication & Meaning

For nearly 50 years, Camp ASCCA has made a meaningful impact on individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are recognized for who they are—not defined by their disabilities. We offer year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities. It’s a unique place where campers can express their individuality and independence in a supportive and supervised environment.

For years, our staff members have returned summer after summer, and we’re excited to share their stories! Through ‘Why ASCCA,’ we explore the big question—why?

Michael Kelly, a veteran staff member who has returned each year since 2019, shares his “Why” for Camp ASCCA.

“My ‘Why ASCCA’ story began in eighth grade when my oldest sister was a student teacher at my middle school. I started visiting her in the self-contained classroom, and after a few weeks, I began helping regularly.

Not long after, I discovered my passion for working with people with disabilities. Over the next two years, I became as involved as possible in various school programs and caregiving opportunities in my hometown.

My first exposure to Camp ASCCA came through my brother, who had started working there years before me. Inspired by his experience, I knew that when I was old enough, I would apply. My first summer at ASCCA, I spent five weeks as a CIT—and I absolutely loved it!

For the next five years, I returned every summer, working in nearly every role available, including CIT, counselor, program staff, and unit leader. I cherished being part of so many ‘firsts’ for our campers, and the joy I experienced was unlike anything else.

After six years of ASCCA summers and countless weekend camps, I can confidently say that Camp ASCCA is truly one of the most amazing places on earth.”
