Why ASCCA: Natalie’s Lasting Joy

For nearly 50 years, Camp ASCCA has positively impacted individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are valued for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and accessible camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities, creating a unique environment where campers can embrace their individuality and independence with support and supervision.

Many of our staff return year after year, captivated by the meaningful connections they’ve made. Through Why ASCCA, we dive into the heart of the question — why?

Natalie’s journey with Camp ASCCA began in 2024. She started as a counselor, worked multiple weekends, and this past summer joined our program staff as a member on the adventure team. Her dedication over the past two years has been continuous and we’re grateful to have her as part of the Camp ASCCA family. Now, Natalie shares her ‘Why ASCCA’ story.

“When I first heard about Camp ASCCA, it was during a pre-nursing class at Auburn University. Nurse Abby, one of our clinical instructors, shared her own experiences at camp and the impact it had on her life. As soon as she began describing ASCCA, something clicked for me. I’ve always had a heart for serving people with disabilities, and I knew I had to see this special place for myself.

My first summer at ASCCA I was working as a counselor—and instantly fell in love. The joy at ASCCA is like nowhere else. The laughter, the love, and the pure excitement that fill every moment are unmatched. From the first camper greeting at the start of the week to the last goodnight song at the end, I can’t imagine not returning for another summer.

The following year, I returned as part of the program staff, this time working the zipline—an activity that held some of my favorite camper memories. Being on the adventure staff let me experience camp in a whole new way. I watched campers conquer fears, celebrate victories, and light up with pride, and I built even more sweet friendships with campers and staff along the way.

Camp ASCCA has truly changed my life for the better. It’s a place where love and acceptance are everywhere, where every person is celebrated, and where memories stay with you long after the summer ends. ASCCA isn’t just a camp—it’s a family, and I’m so grateful to call it my home away from home.”
