Why ASCCA: Scarlett’s Story of Being Rooted in Joy

Camp ASCCA has positively impacted individuals with disabilities, their families, and dedicated staff for almost 50 years. At ASCCA, people are valued and celebrated for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities — a truly unique space where campers can embrace their individuality and independence in a supportive, supervised environment.

Many of our staff return year after year, captivated by the meaningful connections they’ve made. Through Why ASCCA, we dive into the heart of the question — why?

Since 2021, Scarlett has been part of the Camp ASCCA family. Along the way, she has grown through every season, discovered her true passion, and found a joy beyond words. Now, she shares her “Why ASCCA” journey.

“My experience with Camp ASCCA began at a very young age. My aunt and uncle met while working at Camp in the late 2000s, and my grandmother has also been involved for many years, as she resides on Lake Martin. When I turned 15, my aunt encouraged me to apply to be a CIT.

After just one week of working at Camp, my passion for working with people with disabilities began. I had never experienced so much joy and happiness in one place. I have returned every summer since and cannot imagine spending my summer anywhere else. I have worked as a CIT, SCIT, counselor, and this summer, I will be part of the aquatics program staff.

I will always cherish watching the campers’ independence and excitement grow in just one week. Every week is filled with friendships, laughter, fun, and so much more! I am truly grateful for all that Camp ASCCA has brought me and cannot wait to see what’s to come!”
