After campers recharged with a nap and snack, they headed to their various Free Choice Activities for the afternoon. One of the options was a fun pizza making class with special guest Mark McClurg. Mark is the co-owner of Little Italy Pizzeria in Auburn, Alabama!
The activity began with a brief dough-making tutorial from Mark. He went over the ingredients used to make pizza dough and also showed campers the different shapes they could put the dough in. There was even a lesson on how to get the perfect pizza toss!
This is actually Mark’s second or third time coming to Camp and doing this activity with campers. He usually coordinates with Program Director Amber Cotney on when would be best the best time to come, and it’s always a hit with campers! Mark’s connection to Camp ASCCA originates with his Fiance’ who used to be a nurse on staff. He’d come and visit and bring pizzas during our Sports Camp week. One day he and Amber thought it’d be cool if he did a fun pizza making class with the campers and they ended up really enjoying it.
Mark has been in the Pizzeria business for about 12 years in all, but specifically nine years in Auburn. During his college career, he studied engineering and computer programing! Post-graduation, he worked in the field for a little while but soon realized that it wasn’t something he could see himself doing forever. Describing the Pizzeria business as something he just kind of “fell into”, he and a friend moved down to Auburn to open up a Little Italy there and the rest is history!
Before he left us, Mark made sure to leave behind some yummy pizza for us to have at dinner. Everyone enjoyed slices of Pepperoni, Cheese, or Sausage! We appreciate Mark for stopping by and spending time with our campers and we look forward to seeing him again, next summer!
