Perryville Baptist Church and Alabama Power Service Organization will host a Women’s Day at Camp ASCCA Jan. 16.
Organizer Lisa Bevels said the event is a spiritual retreat and hopes it will also teach women about Camp ASCCA, which stands for Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults, provides camping experiences year-round for people with disabilities. Both sponsors donate money to Camp ASCCA and the church even sends youth volunteers occasionally, but many members know little about the camp.
“We’re trying to get more ladies involved with the camp and more aware of what they do,” Bevels said.
The event will feature praise songs from God’s Mercy, a lunch, door prizes and an Elvis impersonator. The guest speaker will be Allison Wetherbee, Camp ASCCA’s public relations director who was born without her arms or legs.
Admission to the event is $10 and the camp will also accept donations, including non-latex medical gloves (all sizes), hand sanitizer, 30 SPF suncreen or higher, new bath or pool towels or monetary donations to the campership program.
Bevels said the event will be held in the Camp ASCCA dining hall, which can hold 200 people. She hopes at least 50 to 100 will attend.
“That would be wonderful for a kick-off,” Bevels said.
The Women’s Day is scheduled for Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is open to women from churches, clubs, organizations or individuals or families. Call 234-3588 or 329-1634 for more information. Tickets may be bought at Alabama Power Company in Dadeville or Alexander City.
