Fourth grade students from Auburn’s Yarbrough Elementary School have traveled to Camp ASCCA over the past two days for an adventurous field trip enjoying the great outdoors. The activities offered by the ASCCA staff included cargo net, canoeing, group elements, nature, and the bungee trampoline. At each program, the students had the opportunity to grow as an individual and learn how to work as a team with their classmates. Once they arrived, the students headed to the gym to be split into groups with their teachers and were led to the first activity of the day.
You could hear the students talking about how excited they were for a fun day outside of the classroom. Some even referred to it as “an exciting day full of recess.” There were a lot of learning opportunities for the students, and the ASCCA staff kept them on their toes by asking questions about the science applied in many of our activities. At nature, the students learned about edible aquifers and how water can be retrieved from an aquifer or layer of permeable rock. They even made their own aquifers with candies, Sprite, and more. They were also challenged to apply how potential and kinetic energies are applied at the bungee trampoline. The ASCCA staff also quizzed them on their knowledge of Lake Martin at canoeing and tested their teamwork at group elements.
During both visits, everyone had a great time and many students were inspired to push themselves to new limits no matter what challenge they face. Several students had the opportunity to experience programs like canoeing and the cargo net for the first time, while others were inspired by their classmates to attempt a flip on the trampoline without the fear of falling. Groups like this one from Yarbrough Elementary School visit Camp ASCCA throughout the year, and it is always a fun experience getting to work with young minds and help them recognize what they are capable of.
