Hey everybody! This month is Autism Awareness Month, and most campers take medication daily while on Camp ASCCA premises. Blister packaging is now required. In addition to celebrating decades, I’m taking you back to past pharmacies like K&B, Big B, Harco, Revco, Rite Aid, and Eckerds.
Upon entering a drugstore, like K&B Store, you would go through a special gate. You would then go the pharmacy counter to drop off your prescription along with your insurance information. In addition to prescriptions, health and beauty products, and over-the-counter medications, many stores also sold their own brand of ice cream. In the past, you could also drop off film or disposable cameras to be developed.
Store brand items often had a purple marking, and the stores even had purple shopping carts. At checkout, there was a purple cash register, and you would receive a receipt with purple printing along with a purple bag. Don’t forget that you can use your FSA funds to purchase sunscreen, medications, and other summer essentials.

In the 1980s, Extra Strength Tylenol capsules were taken off shelves during an investigation related to the Chicago murders. Afterward, Tylenol bottles were replaced with safety-sealed packaging and later introduced in caplet form.
In the past, radios were often turned to beautiful music or easy listening stations like WLPR-FM 96.1 in Mobile, Alabama, whether at home, at work, or in the car. Stations were provided with 15-minute reel-to-reel tapes filled mostly with instrumental music, which were kept in the control room along with commercials. DJs also delivered the news, stock market reports, and weather updates. By the late 1980s and 1990s, these formats began to disappear.
Now is the perfect time to schedule a physical for the required Medical Authorization Form. Amber or Jocelyn will soon open the medical section of the applications, which must be completed before check-in, including the Medical Authorization Form.
Coming up is Rookie Weekend, scheduled for April 24 through 26, for new campers and their families. Parents will be guided to a designated area for a question-and-answer session with Matt and Amber during Rookie Weekend.
