Hey everyone!
It’s been a rainy Session 1, and along the Gulf Coast it’s been raining even harder. Because of the weather, the girls were moved into the boys’ cabins, and the boys were moved into the girls’ cabins. While I’m waiting to go, let’s talk about public transportation.
There are several ways people with disabilities can use public transportation. Here are three different types:
Fixed Route:
A fixed-route bus runs on a set schedule and follows the same route through your neighborhood. You can view the assigned route ahead of time. Be sure to arrive at your bus stop 5–10 minutes before your scheduled pickup time. Once you’re on board, no eating, drinking, or smoking is allowed. You may bring up to six small bags or one large bag. Pull the stop request cord about one block before your destination.
MicroTransit:
MicroTransit is similar to Uber or Lyft. Reservations are made the same day, usually 30 minutes to 1 hour before your desired pickup time. You’ll be given a pickup window, and you should arrive at your pickup location at least 5 minutes early. Drivers may wait only 1–3 minutes before marking you as a no-show.
Paratransit:
To use Paratransit, you’ll need to complete an application and have your doctor sign the required forms. After mailing the application, you’ll attend an in-person assessment and have your photo taken for your ID card. Once you’re approved, reservations must be made at least one day in advance so drivers can be scheduled. You’ll receive your pickup time the night before your trip. Be ready before your assigned pickup time, as you’ll be given a 30-minute pickup window. Once the driver arrives, you have five minutes to board before you’re marked as a no-show.
