Activity Spotlight: Archery

Out of the many activities we offer here at Camp ASCCA, archery is one of the coolest ones! Campers love testing their skills and aim when shooting the bow and arrow. There is nothing quite like hitting the target or even making a bullseye. A lot of the time, campers want to go again and again because of the joy it brings them.

Before the campers shoot, they are geared up with an arm guard that is put on their nondominant hand. This is a piece of safety equipment that protects the campers from getting hit by the string if it whips to the side after shooting. Once they have their arm guard on, it is time to step up to the line and shoot!

Our archery program staff member, Daniel, teaches the campers how to put the arrow in the bow, aim, and shoot! He gives them the best techniques and tips to use when shooting the bow so they have the best chance to hit the target. Once he is done, it is time for the campers to shine! They get to shoot three arrows, and each one ends up being better than the last.

Campers in wheelchairs get to shoot a bow and arrow from a table. Daniel typically uses a trigger device that the campers can pull when they are ready for the arrow to go to the target. It helps pull back the string to their chest, giving them the maximum amount of power for the arrow. Sometimes, campers will also pull back the string itself, which gives them a more personalized experience!

Archery has been an activity that campers have grown to love over the summer. It is so amazing to see them get better after each arrow and watch them hit the target. When they hit the target, it is such a big celebration for them, making them love the activity even more!
