Camp ASCCA Blog

Some campers are scared when they go to some Camp ASCCA activities because they can come off as a bit intimidating. The zipline, waterslide, and tubing are the main ones that some campers are hesitant to try at first. These are all challenge-by-choice activities which mean that if campers do not want to do them, they do not have to. Of course we tell them how much fun they would have at the activity but if the camper is firm about not wanting to try then he/she is not forced to do it.

Today, several campers challenged themselves to the Zip Tower during Free Choice activity rotations. This is usually an activity campers want to do after they’ve gone down the Zip Line earlier in the day. It’s almost like they graduate from one high ropes activity to the next!

Monsters attempted to take over Camp ASCCA today but campers stopped them! Campers had to go to stations spread out throughout camp. There was one at archery, in front of the main office, splash pad, Davis Lodge, the nurses’ station, the Wii Room, the gym, the playground and arts and crafts. Each station had a different game to play or challenge to overcome!

Yesterday we were visited by Pilot clubs, and today we had Elks join us for the day. We had visitors from Elks clubs in Dothan, Mobile, Alexander City, Gadsden, Bessemer, Marion County, Anniston, Cahaba Valley, and Auburn-Opelika. We had multiple tours going at once and some even staying at the waterslide all morning to watch our campers have fun!

ASCCApalooza was an incredible experience for the campers, staff members, and performers. Experience it through our latest documentary!

The campers showed their skills at the talent show this week with singing, dancing, and cheering!

After an exta 30 minutes of nap time, campers were more than ready for Free Choice activity rotations. One of the options was a special Nature project with Nature Director Mary Ryan!

It is a Camp ASCCA tradition that the head counselors design a paddle that goes with the week’s theme and choose a cabin to give it to. This cabin is known as the honor cabin for the week! It is an extreme honor to be named cabin of the week because that means that your cabin stood out from the rest of the great cabins in a positive way.

Today, we were joined by Alabama Pilots Club members from throughout the state. Each summer, we host an annual “Pilots Day” where members visit Camp, spend the morning taking a tour around the campus, and finish the visit off with a delicious lunch alongside the ASCCA campers and staff.

Today, we made our Cargo Net available as a Free Choice activity for the first time this summer! Although it was pretty hard to compete with other fun activities like pool, canoeing and hammocks at the OutPost, we still had a few campers stop by.
