During our time together at ASCCA, campers go without their phones. The love note box gives them the chance to practice personal communication skills and express their love for one another. Throughout the day, they can write love notes to anyone at camp: campers, counselors, program staff, and full-time staff.
The love note box is located in the dining hall, where campers can drop off love notes during meals. At the end of each meal, someone takes time to share the notes with Camp. They read them one by one, asking all involved to stand up for the message. Most of them consist of some form of “I love you” and “Will you go to the dance with me?” After the note’s been read, we lead the campers in a “He/She said yes!” chant.
The art of the love note is meaningful to us. It is how we express ourselves to others, spilling our hearts on a small sheet of paper, or sometimes a napkin. We like to hold on to them to look back on with fondness for both the memory and the person we shared it with. Love notes can be short and sweet, but they carry love and gratitude within them.
