In the afternoons, Camp holds free choice activities where campers can pick an activity to try. Some chose to participate in nature cooking where they learned how to make blueberry jam with Chris Pendergrass.
To start the activity, campers were led to the blueberry bushes to pick fresh fruit for the jam. They were told to pick the ripest ones that were fully blue to ensure that the flavor was delicious.

After picking time was over, Chris led campers into the Nature Center to start mixing up all of the ingredients. First, they added the blueberries to a sauce pan. Next, campers took turns squeezing lemons to add the juice to the mixture. Then they added a few heaping spoonfuls of sugar to bring out the sweetness of the jam. Lastly, they dropped a tiny bit of salt in to enhance all of the flavors.
After the mixture was ready and all mashed up, Chris heated it up outside to start the jam forming process. While the campers waited for it to finish cooking, they spent some quality time with Terry the bearded dragon.
They were given the opportunity to try their freshly made jam at the end of the activity. Campers gave it a great review and enjoyed getting to make it!
