At ASCCA, we have a demonstration farm that allows campers to gain hands-on learning experience with animals. During the summer, our demo farm consists of a cow, two goats, and lots of chickens. Recently, we have also hatched baby chicks that have been so fun to watch grow as the sessions pass. The animal that campers get most excited about out of all of them are the chickens.

Years ago, a tradition was started that still happens each day here at camp. After campers help feed and pet all of the other animals, our demo farm program staff brings out a chicken for campers to see. Somehow, one thing led to another and both campers and staff started asking to put the chicken on their heads. Thus the chicken head tradition was born.
Now, every rotation is asked if they would like to put a chicken on their head. The funniest part is that campers and staff actually do it, and enjoy it. The staff places the chicken on the heads of the willing, giving them the opportunity to smile for a cute picture. You can hear people calling each other “chicken heads” across Camp all the time. Thankfully, the PR staff is able to capture these fun moments at the demo farm. This fun tradition has and will continue to live on for many years to come at ASCCA.
